When you share a read-only/link file on Google Drive, did you know that you're probably sharing the following information? The intent of this post is to inform readers that if they choose to share a file with the global internet - their email address IS visible but the below instructions provide a couple of work arounds. I have chosen not to disclose the methods because I suspect they would be used for more harm than good. However, there are still at least two ways to discover a file owner's email address (Editors' email addresses remain concealed).
Thinking about it, we're probably about five minutes from getting a Drive-based chat client and social network.UPDATED: In August of 2020, Google changed the settings to conceal the address from being seen by way of the method described below. Everyone else just uses other channels to share their stuff. Why would you need to share things using nothing but Drive? This seems like one of those things where they somehow didn't get to talk to any other team or where forced to build their entire infrastructure as a duplicate (as evidenced by the spam filter). The way to permanently share new files is to share a folder (or a Sharepoint for enterprise) and then put new files in there. All I can think of is sending a link to someone else via other channels that will then show "Download" and "Add to my OneDrive". I don't think you can just put stuff in someone elses OneDrive. I have not had one instance of abusing the OneDrive sharing feature and it's not something I ever even conceived of but it makes sense since you can put anyone's email address into the share pane. Is Microsoft even doing anything though? Or is there a difference in OneDrive? I can't think of a single instance of "OneDrive spam". However OneDrive handles this, Google should do that.
